HAYWARD, Alameda County — October 23, 2026. A pothole, damaged public property, abandoned vehicle or graffiti complaint can be easy to post on social media but still never reach city crews. Hayward provides a municipal request channel called Access Hayward that lets residents submit problems, ask questions and offer suggestions directly to city staff. The city’s public service pages link Access Hayward with examples such as graffiti, abandoned vehicles and other public-safety concerns.

What belongs in a routine request?

Nonurgent street and neighborhood conditions that can be documented with a location, photograph and short description are good candidates. Hayward encourages residents to identify the exact site and nature of the problem so the request can go to the responsible department. A vague post saying that “the whole street is dangerous” may be harder to investigate than an intersection, direction of travel, photograph taken safely and a detailed description of what needs repair.

What if the problem is urgent?

Access Hayward is not an alternative to an immediate emergency call. When people are at risk because of an active traffic collision, violence, fire or another life-threatening incident, call 911. For other issues needing an immediate response, use the city’s public-safety and utility emergency contact information, not an unattended web form. Do not walk into live traffic to photograph a hazard; describe the issue from a safe location.

Road safety is also a policy question

Hayward has a broader Safe Streets initiative, introduced in 2025, focused on reducing severe road injuries and fatalities. The city has published public discussions and requests for input into street-safety redesigns. Individual hazard repairs can be reported via a service request; broader concerns about intersections, traffic speed, dangerous crossings and long-term street designs belong in public meetings and transportation planning. These are different channels with different timelines.

How do residents follow the outcome?

Keep the submission number and make clear whether the issue is recurring, time-sensitive or already reported. City response periods vary by issue and agency responsibility. If the location is on a county or state road, a different public agency may control the work. Residents can ask which department owns the issue and what records or completed actions are available. The city’s official site links to Access Hayward, government meetings and department contacts.
